Mrs Currie wins £6000 payout after working as an assembly and production line worker at GEC Hitachi Ltd, of Aberdare. Mrs Currie was employed there from 1973 to 1981 and was employed in the main factory. She was exposed to the noise of wire coiling machinery in particular, plus the noise from the other 50 or so machines in the factory, all involved in the manufacture of television components. Mrs Currie advises that the noise was so loud, she would have to shout to communicate with a colleague, around 3 or 4 feet away.

Mr Lloyd wins £3750.00 payout after working as a weaver and cotton beam fitter, at John Ainscow & Co Ltd of Lostock, Bolton.

Both temporary and permanent hearing damage are almost invariably caused by company negligence to ensure the enforcement of statutory Health & Safety precautions. Where every effort is made and ear protection is provided, in some instances, workers may only partly wear the protection. Complying with the guidance would have prevented excessive noise levels at workplace premises, leading to workers being  permanently disabled by noise induced hearing loss.
