A recent US study has found exposure to second-hand cigarette smoke can double the likelihood of causing hearing loss among teens and young adults. The results could also have implications for the many thousands of workers either near to or have recently taken retirement.

Research suggesting that the severity of a tinnitus condition is related to the level of noise-induced hearing loss has been found in past studies, which detected a significant hearing loss of the high frequencies in over 80 per cent of chronic tinnitus sufferers.

Surveys consistently find that many men and women can often fail to recognise the onset of noise induced hearing loss by up to ten years after spending a number of years constantly exposed to significantly loud noise levels at their place of work.

The very real problems of noise induced hearing loss challenging British armed forces serving in Afghanistan has been raised previously, yet it seems growing numbers of serviceman are still leaving the army in 2011 suffering with hearing loss caused by combat conditions.

It has been estimated that one in every six people experience the effects of tinnitus at some point in their lives yet fail to recognise the condition because the “whistling, rushing or ringing” sounds heard in their ears are thought to be temporary and mostly ignored.
