Mr Bowers wins £2319.20 payout
Mr Bowers wins £2319.20 payout after working initially as an Apprentice Riveter and as a Crane Driver for Appleby Frodingham/ British Steel/ Corus at the site in Brigg Road, Scunthorpe. He was exposed to excessive noise from the the beginning of his employment in 1953 up until he was provided with hearing protection in or around 1973
The working environment was very noisy with Mr Bowers being required to shout to communicate with fellow workers. The crane he drove was large with a noisy Gardner Diesel engine and was set on tracks around 10-15ft in the air. His role as a Crane Driver involved attending derailed locomotives where he would pick up the derailed train and set it back on the track.
This was a particularly difficult case as Mr Bowers attended his GP on a number of occasions with wax however is was only in 2009 that he became aware his hearing loss was noise induced and in fact not wax. It is very common that workers exposed to excessive noise levels that have damaged their hearing have problems with earwax, this can mask the true level of hearing loss and it can take many years before a formal diagnosis of Noise Induced Hearing Loss is made.
